Artist
Marina Gadea is a professional artist from Cádiz, Spain, who expresses energy and emotion through colourful abstract paintings. Marina’s work embodies the artist’s individual and immediate expression of pictorial emotion.
Her work is driven by the observation of landscapes and cultures encountered through travel, with the aim of connecting people and places. She is interested in landscape as a system of representation through which human beings can measure and understand their world. The common thread running through Gadea’s work is a profound fascination with nature, combined with her desire to travel and experience different landscapes.
If science is a way of observing the world, “art, for me, is a way of explaining it.” Inspired by science, nature, poetry, and vast landscapes, I have sought to free images from their context and objects from their function in order to extract their essence and reshape their contours.
An exciting invitation to rediscover the world around us. When I choose a material to work with, I focus on the sense of time it embodies. Brass, copper, graphite, and iron are ancient minerals that have been used since the earliest days of humanity; they are primitive and possess a special and beautiful aura. I feel as though I am returning to the origins of things and to the very act of creation.
My work is fuelled by the scientific observation of natural phenomena. The works are inspired by science, astronomy, natural phenomena, and vast landscapes, freeing images from their context and objects from their functionality in order to extract their essence and reshape their contours.
Together, they reveal a path towards a parallel universe—feminine, sensual, and profoundly transcendental. Art becomes a means of explaining the world: oceanography, geology, volcanology, glaciology, astronomy, gemology, botany… as many fields as there are sources of inspiration.
If science is a way of observing the world, for me, “art is a way of explaining it.” My personal understanding of nature is visually intertwined with scientific research and artistic imagination.
Driven by a curiosity to explore and unravel natural phenomena, I recognise the imaginative vision behind scientific modelling and capture nature’s lyrical mysteries through colour and materials. A shifting duality of contrasts—the spontaneous and the studied, the inspirational and the empirical—characterises my work.
The project stems from research into ocean-floor cartography, a distinctive and relatively little-known field. We are accustomed to seeing the Earth from its most superficial perspective, preventing us from looking beyond the surface of the sea.
Although the oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, they remain among the least extensively mapped areas. Geologist Marie Tharp was responsible for creating the first map of the ocean floor in 1977, combining cartographic mapping techniques with illustration. This resulted in a series of maps depicting the geographical boundaries and features of the ocean floor.
Together with artist Heinrich Berann, Tharp developed a colour system for the maps: red for volcanic areas, blue for abyssal plains, and purple for ocean ridges. This extensive documentation culminated in 1977 with the presentation of a world map of the ocean floor. Tharp brought light and colour to the seabed.
Blue Origin is a proposal centred on new territories waiting to be explored. These maps represent the geographical boundaries of the ocean floor while simultaneously illustrating marine landforms, trenches, and ocean ridges.
