María Vásquez is a contemporary self-portrait artist. She was born in Peru in 1973 and moved to the UK in 2005 from America after living there for 11 years. She studied Photography in 2004 at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“I enjoyed learning cinematographic photography and developing my own images. I discovered that spending hours in the darkroom was fascinating, exciting and relaxing at the same time. I did digital photography several years later and did some self-portrait projects finding inspiration from female artists like Cindy Sherman and Frida Kahlo, among others. I found myself more connected with myself and was able to produce what I wanted to produce or express. Self-portrait is my key to freedom. My camera, my tripod, any light source and myself; we are practically one”

Maria’s work has been exhibited at The Parallax Art Exhibition in Chelsea / London in October 2014, and was also exhibited at The Giles Gallery in Pontyclun, Wales, in January 2015.

In recent years her work has been represented online by galleries such as 5 Pieces Gallery in Switzerland, Saatchi Art and Fine Art America.

Part of his work is exhibited and sold at Es.Arte Gallery in Marbella, Spain.
