Santiago Picatoste

Artist

(Palma de Mallorca, 1971)

My works are born from the superimposition of elements to create a new image.

In other words, through the layering or addition of colours, textures, and industrial materials such as methacrylate, industrial chloroform, and others.

Spontaneity and alchemy have always played an important role in my creative process. My style, or most evident influences, emerges from post-painterly abstraction in connection with “figuration.” It is a reinterpretation of some of the 20th-century artistic movements and styles that interest me most. In recent years, these concepts have been joined by an industrial dimension: the idea of constructing or assembling elements and materials to offer a new interpretation, without losing sight of what I consider “a celebration of visual expression.”

I have always maintained a close relationship with the urban environment—the great metropolis—as a source of contemporary trends and ideas. I firmly believe that the successful resolution of a work of art is based on contrast. For this reason, the concept of background/form is clearly evident throughout my work and has become a recurring theme in my artistic career.
